5 do-it-yourself cleaners to refresh your home

1. Cleaner for walls and cabinets

If you have old cabinets, this cleaning solution will deodorize them while removing dust and dirt:

  • 1 cup (250 mL) light household ammonia
  • 250 ml (1 cup) white vinegar
  • 50 g (1/4 cup) of baking soda
  • 3.75 L (1 gallon) hot water
  1. Mix ammonia, vinegar and baking soda in a large bucket. Add water and stir.
  2. Use a sponge or cloth to wash the walls, ceilings, floors or cabinets.
  3. Wipe the excess liquid with a clean cloth and let it dry completely before replacing content.

2. Cleaner interior walls

The scuff marks and stains on your wallpapers always seem to magically appear. This powerful cleaner will remove without damaging your paint:

  • 125 g (1/2 cup) borax
  • 15 ml (1 c) of clear ammonia
  • 50 ml (1/4 cup) of vinegar
  • 3.75 L (1 gallon) of hot water
  1. In a large bucket, mix all ingredients.
  2. Apply the solution on the wall with a clean sponge. Use a second clean sponge to wash the wall with water.
  3. To minimize scratches, start with the bottom of the wall going up.

3. Herbal Rug Sanitizer

Many room air fresheners or commercial carpets help to mask odors by smothering the nerves associated with your sense of smell. To really refresh your carpets, try this natural and inexpensive formula instead. (If you do not like the smell of lavender, you can also refresh your carpets with baking soda).

  • 125 g (1/2 cup) lavender flowers
  • 250 g (1 cup) of baking soda
  1. In a large bowl, crush the lavender flowers to release their fragrance.
  2. Add the baking soda and mix well. Pour the mixture into a cheese sprinkler or tin can with holes drilled in the lid.
  3. Sprinkle liberally on the carpet. Wait 30 minutes, then vacuum.

4. Spicy carpet freshener

Give a good smell to your room while refreshing your carpets with this simple mixture:

  • 250 g (1 cup) of baking soda or cornstarch
  • 7 to 10 drops of essential oil with your favorite fragrance (eucalyptus or rosewood, for example).
  1. In a large bowl, mix cornstarch or baking soda with essential oil. Eliminate the lumps with a fork and mix well. For the mixture into a cheese shaker or a tin with holes drilled in the lid.
  2. Sprinkle liberally on the carpet. Wait 30 minutes, then vacuum.

5. Cleaner pine floors

You should not need to spend a small fortune to give your no-wax floors a good smell of fresh pine.

This excellent cleanser will do it for only pennies per floor. Soap flakes are not easy to find, at least not, it will only take a minute or two.

  • 125 g (1/2 cup) of soap flakes
  • 50 g (1/4 cup) of sodium hydroxide solution
  • 250 g (1 cup) of salt
  • 500 ml (2 cups) of water
  • 10 mL (2 tsp.) Tall oil
  • 1 clean plastic bottle with a sealed cap 500 ml (16 oz)
  • 250 ml (1 cup) of white vinegar.
  1. To make soap flakes, grate a little pure soap bar on a coarse grater kitchen.
  2. In a saucepan over low heat, mix the soap, lye, salt and water and stir until soap, soda and salt are dissolved.
  3. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool until it is lukewarm. Add pine oil. Stir well, for the plastic bottle and close it.
  4. To use, for 30-45 ml (two or three tablespoons) of the cleaner in a bucket of hot water, stirring well. For larger areas, you may need to double the amount.
  5. After cleaning, add a bucket of water and rinse the floor.
